Power semiconductors play the following four principal roles.

For instance, AC adopters convert AC of commercial power into DC normally used in electronic equipment.

For instance, an inverter in an air conditioner changes current frequency and continuously changes rpm of AC motor of compressor, which makes it possible to maintain room temperature and save power.

For instance, DC-DC converters are used in various parts of electronic equipment in order to change voltage as driving voltage of electronic circuit varies.

For instance, an inverter-like power conditioner for solar power generation system converts DC generated in solar panels into AC usable at home.


With a development of the information society, power consumption of IT devices drastically increases. In addition, power consumption of equipment using a large amount of power is expected to grow. Therefore, enhancing power efficiencies of power semiconductors used in every electronic device is an important subject in order to save power and realize a low carbon society.
